Lesotho is Africa’s
“Kingdom in the Sky”, also known as the “Friendly Mountain Kingdom”.
This popular eco destination is characterised by its remote, rugged
mountains and deep valleys, with plummeting waterfalls that form
spectacular frozen stalactites in the winter months.
Lesotho is a truly idyllic destination. A mere 20 minutes’ drive from
Caledon Gardens is a place where the sun shines 300 days a year. This
unique country has a lowest point that is 1000m above sea level and
boasts the highest single-drop waterfall in southern Africa. It has the
highest road pass in southern Africa at 3275m and is one of only three
countries in the world that is completely landlocked. Lesotho’s two
main mountain ranges are the snow-capped Maluti and Drakensberg ranges.
The capital, Maseru, is the only city in Lesotho. However, there are
also several large towns in each of the 10 districts.
The ever-friendly Basotho people
are eager to share their culture with
tourists. The serene simplicity of their highland life is enviable.
This is indeed a country where time stands still.
Discover and explore this virtually undeveloped green, fertile, lush,
verdant land. Experience its unforgettable scenic beauty on a mountain
hike or from the back of one of the local Basotho ponies for the
ultimate outdoor experience.
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a joint enterprise with South
Africa that has dammed the Malibamats’o river at Katse.
Water from the Katse Reservoir
reaches South Africa through two successive tunnels. Between these, at
‘Muela, the water flows through a hydropower plant, generating
electricity for Lesotho. After it crosses the border through the second
tunnel, the water is discharged into the Ash river, which eventually
feeds the Vaal Dam.
