| It is
“Art” to discover the figure in the stone as it is done by Edious
Nyagweta. He circles around it time after time until the decisive
moment arrives: he sees what is in the stone and starts then
immediately with his work. The sandstone sculptures from Edious need
hardly an explanation or an interpretation. Form and expressiveness
speak for themselves. The artist has his own signature: the faces of
his figures are unmistakably wide, with closed eyes and lost in
thoughts, hands and arms surround and protect, the fingers are long. Edious was born in 1978 in a poor region 170 km south of Harare in Zimbabwe. In the village lived also the famous artist Thomas Mukarobwa and it happened that Edious got to know this sculptor and painter. Edious was inspired by the talents of the master and he visited him as often as he could. Already as child he was allowed to use his tools and became later the apprentice of the great master. It was and still is his objective and calling to create a fine expressive sculpture out of a rough rock. |
